Why it matters
- The 45 × 45 mm OSM module combines QCS6490 compute with a cited 12 TOPS AI capability in a compact embedded form factor.
- Ubuntu LTS certification can reduce BSP and maintenance uncertainty for teams that prefer mainstream Linux over a bespoke embedded distribution.
- Long-term security support, camera drivers, QAIRT/QNN tooling and carrier-board availability now become the practical design-in questions.
Operating-system maturity can change a hardware decision
A compute module may look attractive on paper but become expensive if the product team must maintain a custom Linux stack. Advantech’s Ubuntu 24.04 LTS certification for AOM-2721 reduces that particular risk around Qualcomm’s QCS6490.
The module is positioned around a compact 45 × 45 mm OSM form factor and Advantech cites up to 12 TOPS of AI performance.
Ubuntu broadens the developer pool
A mainstream LTS distribution can make package management, security maintenance and application development more familiar to teams that do not want to live inside a vendor-specific Yocto environment.
That does not eliminate Qualcomm-specific software. Camera support, AI acceleration and low-level device enablement still depend on BSP quality, QAIRT/QNN tooling and Advantech’s maintained drivers.
The comparison with other QCS6490 modules becomes more interesting
AAEON and other module vendors also expose QCS6490 in standardized form factors. AOM-2721’s Ubuntu certification gives it a differentiator that can be weighed against carrier availability, temperature range, pricing, I/O and lifecycle.
For Canadian OEMs, those system-level differences will matter more than the shared SoC name.
FlyPig AI interpretationAOM-2721 is a good example of software certification increasing hardware value. FlyPig would compare QCS6490 modules not only on form factor and TOPS, but on Linux maintenance, camera enablement and how quickly a team can reproduce the vendor’s supported stack.
Status, open questions and Canada relevance
Current product status
Advantech and Canonical have announced Ubuntu 24.04 certification for AOM-2721. Module ordering, carrier options and complete software-image support remain configuration- and region-specific.
What remains open
- Which carrier boards, BSP images, AI SDK versions and camera combinations are validated together?
- What are current sample, production, lifecycle and Canadian distribution terms?
Why Canadian teams may care
Canadian OEMs can evaluate a compact Qualcomm edge-AI module with a certified Ubuntu base, potentially reducing operating-system bring-up work for connected devices.
